Cox Preparing Talented Juveniles Mr. Monomoy, Taraz For Major Points Preps

Trainer Brad Cox has plans in place to get two of his talented 2-year-olds ready for their 2020 campaigns, reports the Daily Racing Form. Mr. Monomoy, the half-brother to champion Monomoy Girl, will try two turns for the first time in an allowance race Saturday at the Fair Grounds, a race Cox hopes will step the colt forward for January’s G3 Lecomte Stakes, a points race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

“On pedigree, yeah, he should go two turns,” Cox told the Daily Racing Form of the son of Palace Malice. “I don’t think he’s a six-furlong horse. A middle distance like a mile, mile and an eighth should be fine, but we don’t really know yet.”

Mr. Monomoy was troubled early in his debut and found himself last of the 12-horse field early, but came rallying in the stretch to be fourth at Keeneland in October. The colt broke his maiden in his second start at Churchill by 5 1/2 lengths, running 6 1/2 furlongs on the dirt in 1:17.57. The one mile and seventy yard allowance will go as the 13th race on Saturday’s card in New Orleans, with Florent Geroux named to ride.

Cox’s other talented juvenile scheduled to race on Saturday is Taraz, the daughter of Into Mischief who broke her maiden by 7 1/2 lengths on debut at Churchill Downs last month. The filly will contest the third race on the card, the Letellier Memorial Stakes over six furlongs on the main track. Cox said he does plan to stretch Taraz out to two turns in the future in hopes of preparing her for a start on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks.
