COVID-19: Graded Stakes Committee Decreases Purse Requirements For Grade 1, 2 Races

The American Graded Stakes Committee will decrease the minimum purse requirements for Grade 1 and Grade 2 races in 2020, according to a report in the Daily Racing Form, due to the ongoing financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Grade 1 races will now have a minimum purse requirement of $250,000 rather than $300,000, and Grade 2 races will have a minimum purse requirement of $150,000, down from $200,000.

“With the cessation of racing and casino operations, purse accounts are being negatively impacted and the ability to fund graded stakes races in 2020 to the current minimum purse requirements may be impaired,” wrote AGSC secretary, Andy Schweigardt, in a memo on Wednesday.
