Covfefe To Aim For Filly & Mare Sprint Repeat In 2020; Whitmore May Get Another Sprint Try

Covfefe, winner of the Filly & Mare Sprint last Saturday, will take the remainder of the year off but prepare for a 4-year-old campaign hopefully culminating in a repeat Breeders’ Cup bid at Keeneland in 2020, trainer Brad Cox told the Daily Racing Form Wednesday.

Cox said the daughter of Into Mischief would likely get a couple months off at a training center in Florida before returning to training.

As for British Idiom, Cox’s winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, she could target a next start in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds in mid-February. The trainer said Owendale, 10th in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, just never really took to the Santa Anita Track.

Meanwhile, trainer Ron Moquett said Whitmore, who has hit the board in the last two Breeders’ Cup Sprints (3rd this year, 2nd last year), will stay in training for 2020. The 6-year-old gelding already has a dozen wins from 30 starts with a dozen more in-the-money finishes and more than $2.8 million in earnings.

Moquett plans to aim Whitmore for a third consecutive start in the Sprint at Keeneland next year.

“He’s the boss, he makes the rules,” Moquett told DRF.
