Colonial Downs Cancels Remainder Of 2020 Meet Due To COVID-19

Colonial Downs announced Friday evening that it has cancelled the remainder of its 2020 summer meet due to COVID-19. The meet had been scheduled to include nine more cards, including the 2020 Virginia Derby on Sept. 1.

A report by the Daily Racing Form indicated jockey Trevor McCarthy experienced symptoms of the virus on Saturday, took off his Sunday and Monday mounts and received a positive COVID-19 test result on Tuesday. Colonial cancelled its Tuesday and Wednesday cards this week as a result. The track’s entire jockey colony was subsequently tested for the virus. Due to privacy laws surrounding medical information, the track was not permitted to disclose the number of COVID-19 positives resulting from that testing, or the identity of the jockeys who tested positive.

Colonial has had a difficult 2020 season, having cancelled two cards due to extreme heat and residual rain from a tropical storm.

The track released the following statement to media:

“Colonial Downs Group places the health and safety of our team, partners and visitors as our top priority. We established thorough protocols prior to the 2020 racing season to address any issues that may arise from the coronavirus pandemic.

As a result of recent test results at the track in New Kent County, and in an abundance of caution, Colonial Downs is cancelling the remainder of its 2020 meet. In making our decision, we collaborated with the Virginia Department of Health, Virginia Horsemen’s Benevolent Protection Association (VHBPA) and Virginia Racing Commission. We have communicated the outcome with all participating parties. We sincerely appreciate everyone’s cooperation and support.

This was a difficult decision, but the best one for Virginia’s racing community. We are already starting to make plans for the 2021 meet at Colonial Downs and are optimistic for a safe return in a better health environment for our nation, state and community.”
