Classic Runner-Up Toast Of New York Ready For ‘Active’ Retirement

Toast of New York has been retired once again at the age of eight, reports The gelded son of Thewayyouare earned more than $2 million in his 13-start career, winning the UAE Derby in 2014 and finishing second by inches in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Trained by Jamie Osborne, “Toast” was originally owned by Michael Buckley. Al Shaqab Racing purchased him after the Classic, but a tendon injury forced his retirement to stud. Returned to training in 2017 and later gelded, Toast of New York did find the winner’s circle again and enjoyed a brief stint in the United States, but he never regained his old form.

“For me he came along at the right time and changed my life, he changed Michael Buckley’s life, and we’re forever grateful,” said Osborne. “We now owe it to the horse to give him a great retirement. He’s not a horse who would be happy doing nothing, he needs to be active so we’ll be sure to find him a nice purpose in life.”
