Clark, Cigar Mile Next Targets For Maximum Security En Route To Pegasus World Cup

Two-time Grade 1 winner Maximum Security will be targeting the $9 million Pegasus World Cup at the beginning of 2020, but connections have yet to decide on a prep race between now and then. According to horseracingnation.com, the options include the G1 Clark Handicap at Churchill on Nov. 29, or the G1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Dec. 7.

“I have no idea what Mr. West and Jason are going to decide on,” said Ben Glass, racing manager for owners Gary and Mary West, “but it’ll be one of those two, and hopefully it will be a good prep for the Pegasus.”

The 3-year-old son of New Year’s Day, trained by Jason Servis, was planning a start in the G1 Pennsylvania Derby when an episode of colic forced his scratch. Instead of pushing the colt to make the Breeders’ Cup, Servis pointed Maximum Security to the G3 Bold Ruler at Belmont. After setting all the fractions, the colt won by 1 3/4 lengths.

Earlier this year, Maximum Security won the G1 Florida Derby before crossing the wire first in the Kentucky Derby and being disqualified for interference. He came back to win the G1 Haskell Invitational at his home base of Monmouth Park in the summer. His record stands at six wins from eight starts for earnings of $1,389,400.
