City Of Solana Beach, Del Mar Fairgrounds At Odds Over Proposed Concert Venue

The City of Solana Beach and the Del Mar Fairgrounds are at odds over the plan to open a 1,900-seat venue at the fairgrounds next year.

The project has a target completion date of May 1, 2018. The venue, in addition to having a  two-level live-music venue (organizers plan to host 90 shows per year),) will also be expanded to eventually include a 7,000-square-foot beer-tasting area and exhibit named the History of Beer.

According to NBC San Diego, the group that owns the Del Mar Fairgrounds – the 22nd District Agricultural Association – voted unanimously in May to proceed with plans to convert/renovate the existing off-track betting parlor known as the Surfside Race Place, despite several residents voicing concerns about the project and its impact on the area.

On June 23, the city of Solana Beach filed a civil complaint in San Diego Superior Court to halt the project, and require the Fairgrounds group to “comply with the California Environment Quality Act… and its implementing regulations … and to perform the environmental review required by law before approving a proposed expansion of existing uses and redevelopment of existing facilities.”

David Watson, the director of the 22nd DAA, told board members at a meeting in January that, “This building [under] the current permit allows a 5,000-per-day occupancy. It is nowhere near that number.”

“Simply converting a portion of it to a 1,800- or 1,900-seat concert venue should have no changes in traffic, no changes in parking.”

The injunction filed in June seeks to address that by halting the project until a full environmental impact report can be performed.
