Churchill: Zoning Board Approves Request For Eight-Foot Fence As Parking Project Continues

The Louisville Zoning Board of Appeals gave its approval Monday to Churchill Downs' plans to add more landscaping and build an eight-foot fence/wall around the area where the company plans to expand its parking area.

WAVE-3 reports that Churchill Downs wants to add the fence as a safety measure, since there have been several break-ins reported in the area.

“Churchill Downs is just simply looking for security,” said Churchill representative Jonathan Baker said at the meeting. “They have had a number of breaks-ins where people have jumped over the fence that is there today.”

Churchill Downs purchased 50 acres earlier this year in order to add about 100 more parking spots. The track will also add traffic islands which will hopefully improve traffic flow.

Many neighbors were concerned about the project causing several roads to be closed in the area, while some renters worry about having to relocate.

“I was trying to make this our forever home,” said renter Cheryllyan Rayhel. “They said I have to move within the next three years.”

“They will make tons of money but it will be hard for us,” Rayhel added. “Right now, we are just confused. We don't know what we are going to do really.”
