Churchill Downs Memorializes John Asher With One Final Lap

In a fitting tribute for a man who loved all things Kentucky Derby, a hearse carrying the late John Asher circled Churchill Downs Tuesday, going 1 1/4 miles while “My Old Kentucky Home” played.

Asher, longtime Churchill Downs spokesman and veteran radio man, was flanked by outriders during the ceremony. Asher died of an apparent heart attack last week at age 62 while vacationing with his family in Florida.

“If anyone deserves this, it’s John Asher,” said outrider Greg Blasi.

Asher’s visitation is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon with the funeral set for Wednesday at Louisville’s Cathedral of the Assumption.

Escorted by outriders, John Asher makes a final 1 ¼-mile trip beneath the historic Twin Spires of Churchill Downs. https://t.co/FNvQkjzS9V
