Charlatan, Nadal To Target Arkansas Derby; Baffert Will Back Off With Authentic

Top 3-year-olds in the barn of Bob Baffert now have their marching orders, the Hall of Fame trainer told NBC Sports on Wednesday. The four contenders will all be trying to make it to the first Saturday in September, the date of the rescheduled Kentucky Derby.

This weekend, Thousand Words (Pioneerof The Nile) will ship to Oaklawn Park to contest the Oaklawn Stakes – a race which offers the winner a berth in the second jewel of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, for which a date change has not been finalized. In addition, the Oaklawn Stakes will grant the first three finishers a spot in the starting gate for the G1 Arkansas Derby, rescheduled for May 2.

Meanwhile, undefeated Authentic will downshift to tack walking for the next couple weeks, Baffert said. The Into Mischief colt could be pointed to the G3 Affirmed Stakes, scheduled for June 18 at Santa Anita, if racing resumes at the Southern California track.

Talented upstarts Charlatan and Nadal will both be pointed to the G1 Arkansas Derby, added Baffert. Nadal (Blame) won the G2 San Vicente before taking Oaklawn’s G2 Rebel in his most recent start, while Charlatan (Speightstown) has won both of his starts against allowance company. The latter colt could target a Southern California Stakes race if racing resumes in the next several weeks.
