Champion Abel Tasman To Visit Galileo For First Mating

Abel Tasman, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2017, will be paired with global powerhouse Galileo for her first mating in Ireland during the upcoming breeding season.

The Coolmore operation, which owns both Galileo and Abel Tasman, announced the mating on its social media channels.

Coolmore bought Abel Tasman at this year’s Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale for $5 million, which was a record-tying price for the auction. After the fall of the hammer, Coolmore America general manager Dermot Ryan listed Galileo among the shortlist of stallions Abel Tasman could visit in 2019, along with a trio of stateside suitors from Coolmore’s Ashford Stud: American Pharoah, Justify, and Uncle Mo.

Abel Tasman arrived at Coolmore’s Irish base earlier in the week for her eventual mating with Galileo, who enters his 17th year of stud duty this season. Galileo, a son of Sadler’s Wells, has established himself as a cornerstone of Coolmore’s racing and breeding operations, siring 190 graded or group stakes winners worldwide, 75 of which have earned G1 black type.

Galileo also carried the Coolmore colors prominently on the racetrack, winning each of his first six starts, highlighted by the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, Irish Derby, and Epsom Derby.

Abel Tasman, a 5-year-old daughter of Quality Road, won eight of 16 starts during her on-track career for earnings of $2,793,385. Her sextet of Grade 1 victories includes the Kentucky Oaks, Starlet Stakes, Acorn Stakes, Coaching Club American Oaks, Ogden Phipps Stakes, and Personal Ensign Stakes.

Bred in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms, Abel Tasman is out of the unplaced Deputy Minister mare Vargas Girl, whose five winners from six runners also includes G3 winner Sky Girl and stakes-placed Moonlight Sky. The extended family includes G1 winner Bevo, G2 winners Wilburn and Beethoven, and G3 winner Moonlight Sonata.
