Carvajal Believes Vet-Scratched Imperial Hint ‘Was 100 Percent Right,’ Will Run Next Year

Trainer Luis Carvajal, Jr. was disappointed when veterinarians scratched Imperial Hint on the morning of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, and told horseracingnation.com that despite the horse’s “Win and You’re In” paying the entry fees, there were other expenses related to traveling to Santa Anita which placed a strain on his 15-horse operation.

Vets scratched the 6-year-old son of Imperialism due to irritation on the front left coronet band. Carvajal said the issue was due to glue-on shoes, and did not compromise the horse.

“There was no issue with the horse’s foot or ankle or knee or tendon or anything like that,” the trainer said. “The horse trained every single day. He looked great on the track. I can say he looked probably 10 times better than some of the other horses who were in the Breeders’ Cup.

“I’ve had this horse since he was 2 years old. I know this horse from head to toe. I believe this horse was 100 percent right.”

Carvajal said that owner Raymond Mamone intends to run Imperial Hint next year as a 7-year-old, with a trip to back to Dubai among the possibilities. The horse has currently resumed training at Tampa Bay Downs.
