Carryover Triggers Massive $1.7 Million Pool In Sunday’s Late Pick 5 At Santa Anita

An astounding total Late Pick 5 pool of $1,709,442 was reached at fifth race post time Sunday at Santa Anita Park. The 50 cent Late Pick 5, which requires players to select the winners of the final five races on each day’s card, had carried over from Saturday in the amount of $192,748.

This spurred investment of $1,516,694 in “new money” on Sunday, creating the astronomical total “Late Five” pool which exceeded $1.7 million.

With trainer Sam Scolamieri’s Touchdown U S C winning by a half length as the 2-1 favorite in race five, the wager got off to a formful beginning. Favorites won the second (Bold Papa, $6.80) and third (Show It N Moe It, $4.60) legs before John Sadler-trained Selcourt posted a mile upset ($8.40) in the Kalookan Queen Stakes, the fourth leg. Bob Baffert-trained Plein Air finished off the sequence with a front-running $16.60 upset in the final race of the day, the Astra Stakes, triggering a $780.85 payout on the fifty cent wager.
