Cambier Parc Upsets Stablemate Newspaperofrecord To Win Grade 3 Wonder Again

The bettors were confident a Chad Brown horse would prevail in the Grade 3 Wonder Again at Belmont Park Thursday, but the one who won wasn’t the Brown horse most people had in mind. Cambier Parc stalked her accomplished stablemate Newspaperofrecord (IRE) throughout the 1 1/8-mile turf contest and whittled away at her lead, drawing even and ultimately outfighting Newspaperofrecord. Jose Ortiz was on Cambier Parc (while his brother Irad was on the runner-up), who finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Newspaperofrecord.

The race was the third career victory for the OXO Equine daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, who also won the G3 Herecomesthebride earlier this year.

The 3-year-old Cambier Parc was bred in Kentucky by Bonne Chance Farm and is out of Point Given daughter Sealy Hill, who was an accomplished runner herself, as the first Canadian Triple Tiara winner. Sealy Hill was the 2007 Canadian Horse of the Year.

Cambier Parc was a $1.25 million yearling purchase by OXO Equine’s Larry Best at the 2017 Keeneland September sale.

Kelsey’s Cross was third behind heavy favorite Newsaperofrecord. The final time for the race was 1:46.34. See the full chart here.

Chad Brown, winning trainer of Cambier Parc (No. 4, $12.40), and runner-up and beaten favorite Newspaperofrecord (No. 3): “Newspaperofrecord was disappointing. She couldn’t stay a mile and an eighth today. I thought Irad ([Ortiz, Jr.] did all right today. She’s always going to be a horse that tugs along on the front end. I thought the fractions were fair though. I have to believe the turf was drying out well. I didn’t see any excuse for the trip she got, or the fractions. The only thing I would say about her is what I’d like to see next time against a bigger field if we go on to the Belmont Oaks. I would like to see her have someone to follow deeper into the stretch.

“I just wonder if she’s getting lost alone on the lead. This is the second time she’s gotten passed in the stretch after drawing off. Last year, against a different kind of horse – lightly raced horses – they weren’t going to catch her. Now, she’s gotten run down by two really good horses. Opening up a big lead in the stretch might not be the logical thing to do anymore. We’ll try different things with her.”

On Cambier Parc: “I’m not surprised Cambier Parc ran this well. That’s why we had her in the race. She’s a much better horse on firm ground. That race at Churchill [fourth in the Grade 3 Edgewood] didn’t do her any justice. She has the bloodlines to do it. Her mother [Sealy Hill] was second in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. As you saw today, she’s an up-and-comer in this division.

“I don’t want to take anything away from her win today. It was her day.”

Jose Ortiz, winning jockey aboard Cambier Parc (No. 4): “She broke good and relaxed nicely. Nobody else could keep up by the quarter pole and I got an easy, perfect trip. At the top of the stretch, I didn’t know if I was going to get there because Newspaperofrecord is a really good filly, but when I saw that she didn’t get away from me, I thought I had a shot passing the eighth pole. In the last eighth of a mile, my filly was just better.”

Irad Ortiz Jr., jockey aboard runner-up Newspaperofrecord (No. 3): “She was a little rank going a mile and an eighth. We’ll have to work it out. She didn’t run bad, but I know she’s better than that.”
