California Stewards To Trade Places During Del Mar Meet

Del Mar will have a new steward in the booth for the first time in three years this summer, reports drf.com. John Herbuveaux, from Golden Gate Fields, will replace Scott Chaney, while Chaney will take a position at the Sonoma County Fair.

California Horse Racing Board officials declared that they would implement a rotation of stewards in Southern California just over a month ago, following a controversial decision not to disqualify Achira for interference at Santa Anita on May 6.

“It’s easier said than done,” said CHRB executive director Rick Baedeker. “With family obligations, it’s difficult to move for months at a time. We need to be respectful of that. I’m concerned we may lose stewards. Anyone who works with them appreciates their integrity and professionalism. It is not easy to find people who want to do that work.”
