Cairo Cat Posts 17-1 Upset In Iroquois To Kick Off Road To The Kentucky Derby

Kicking off the points race on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby,” Walking L Thoroughbreds’ Cairo Cat got up late at odds of 17-1 to win Saturday’s Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs. The juvenile son of Cairo Prince, ridden by Brian Hernandez, came up the rail and angled out to run down determined even-money favorite Tight Ten on the wire, winning by about a half-length. Trained by Ken McPeek, Cairo Cat completed 1 1/16 miles over the fast main track in 1:45.35, earning 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby as well as an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in November.

“He did everything we asked him,” said Hernandez. “We warmed up really good in the post parade. This was my first time I was on him and I thought to myself how smooth he was going. He traveled well the whole way around. He certainly didn’t travel like he was a 2-year-old.  It’s easy to put in those type of rides with a horse that has that much confidence to put himself in spots like that.”

He broke a bit slowly but Cairo Cat showed significant poise to weave through traffic and take third entering the far turn. Tight Ten had the lead all the way around the oval until the sixteenth pole, when Hernandez finally found a slot to get Cairo Cat off the rail. The colt was then able to ground out the win, crossing the wire about a half-length ahead of Tight Ten. Pole Setter was third and Tobacco Road was fourth.

“This is a really nice colt,” said assistant Greg Geier. “Kenny told me after he broke his maiden to try the Iroquois and here we are. He worked really well last week. We’ll see how he comes out of things but it’s nice the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is right here in our backyard.”

Bred in Kentucky by Clifton Farm, Cairo Cat was a $130,000 yearling at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall sale. A winner at Saratoga in his second start, Cairo Cat has now won two of his three starts for earnings of over $130,000.
