By Your Side Parlays Perfect Trip Into Sanford Victory

Anderson Stables’ By Your Side put in an impressive performance in Saturday’s Grade 3 Sanford Stakes, drawing away late to score by three lengths in his second career start. The 2-year-old son of Constitution and jockey Irad Ortiz covered six furlongs in 1:10.22 over Saratoga’s fast main track. Trained by Eddie Kenneally, By Your Side settled off the pace and took over in the stretch to win as the 7-5 favorite in the field of five.

“He’s shown that he’s the real deal for a while,” said Kenneally. “He’s a very professional horse. He just does everything right and relaxed nicely after breaking quick. Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] allowed the speed horses to go on out, and the horse was content to relax on the outside. Perfect position [and] beautiful ride. He’s good but might be even better going long.”

An objection by Javier Castellano against Kendrick Carmouche, aboard the third and second-place finishers, respectively, was disallowed by the stewards.

Tomato Bill was hustled out of the starting gate and led by about three-quarters of a length down the backstretch, speeding through a first quarter in :22.60 under Kendrick Carmouche. By Your Side was well-placed on the outside in second, while Raging Whiskey and Javier Castellano maintained position along the rail in a joint third with Cucina.

Rounding the far turn after a half in :46.19, Tomato Bill had a slight lead over By Your Side as Raging Whiskey tried to advance up the rail. Down the stretch, By Your Side and Ortiz pulled away from the field convincingly to win by about three lengths. Tomato Bill wandered a bit in the stretch, impeding the path of Raging Whiskey in the final hundred yards but clearly second best.

“I got a perfect trip,” Ortiz said. “I had the outside post and he put me in a good spot early. He broke good on top. The speed went and he was second. He was acting like a professional. He relaxed so well and when I asked him to go, he just turned on.”

Bred in Kentucky by Columbiana Farm, By Your Side was a $240,000 yearling purchase at the Keeneland September sale. He won on debut with a determined nose victory at Churchill Downs, and the Sanford win improves his record to a perfect 2-for-2 and earnings of $140,000.

“He came to me at Keeneland in April and just continued on from there,” Kenneally continued. “He never did anything wrong. He has a very efficient, long stride, and his pedigree says that he wants to go longer. The way he relaxed will help the horse go longer as well.”
