Bruised Heel ‘Never A Major Issue’ For Tiz The Law; Colt Works Toward Florida Derby

Early Kentucky Derby favorite Tiz The Law recorded a half-mile breeze in 50 seconds Monday morning at Palm Meadows, his first work since February 10. The 3-year-old son of Constitution had been nursing a bruised heel, but trainer Barclay Tagg told that the foot is no longer an issue.

“He went great,” Tagg told “An easy half-mile to get something under his belt, that’s all I wanted. [Regular rider] Manny [Franco] came back from New York to ride, and I was very happy with the way he went. He was happy and came out of it good. He might have bruised his heel a little when he lost the shoe a couple of weeks ago, but it was never a major issue and that’s all done with now.”

Photos from the workout appear to show Tiz the Law donning patented Hanton Glue-On shoes, with unique “tabs” of glue placed on the outside of the hoof wall rather than below the foot. According to the website, “since adhesive is only applied over tabs on the front half of the shoe and the heels aren’t ‘locked in’ with glue, this allows the back of the horse’s foot to flex and absorb concussion the way nature intended.”

Tiz the Law is pointing to the Florida Derby on March 28 at Gulfstream Park, where he will likely face a rematch with this weekend’s front-running Fountain of Youth winner Ete Indien. The last time the two colts met, Tiz the Law defeated Ete Indien by three lengths in the G3 Holy Bull.

Tiz the Law worked 4 furlongs in :50.00 at Palm Meadows on March 2nd, 2020, for trainer Barclay Tagg.
