British Idiom, Venetian Harbor Among 14 Fillies Entered In Friday’s Fantasy Stakes

Fourteen 3-year-old fillies, led by 2019 Eclipse champion and Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner British Idiom, have been entered in Friday’s $400,000 Fantasy Stakes, a Grade 3 race going 1 1/16 miles at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Ark., that offers 170 Kentucky Oaks points (100-40-20-10) to the top four finishers.

The Fantasy was originally to be run earlier in the meeting but was moved to the penultimate day, May 1, which coincides with the date the G1 Kentucky Oaks was going to be run. That race, along with the G1 Kentucky Derby, were moved to Sept. 4 and 5 because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that has temporarily halted racing in many states.

British Idiom was defeated for the first time in a four-race career when second to Infinite in her 3-year-old debut Feb. 15 at Fair Grounds in the G2 Rachel Alexandra. Trained by Brad Cox, the Flashback filly will be ridden by Javier Castellano and breaks from the No. 10 post position. Cox will be gunning for his second Fantasy win, having won the race in 2018 with Sassy Sienna.

The Richard Baltas-trained Venetian Harbor comes into the Fantasy off two powerful winning performances in California, most recently a 9 ¼-length victory in the G2 Las Virgenes at Santa Anita on Feb. 8. The daughter of Munnings graduated from the maiden ranks on Dec. 29, winning by 10 ¾ lengths at Santa Anita and earning a 94 Beyer Speed Figure – the highest of any of the Fantasy entrants. Flavien Prat comes in from California to ride Venetian Harbor, who drew the No. 2 post.

Trainer Steve Asmussen, who has won three of the last four runnings of the Fantasy, has a pair entered. Fire Coral (by Curlin) won a maiden and allowance race at Oaklawn during the current meet and gets the services of Tyler Baze, breaking from the 11 post. Alta’s Award, breaking from the outside 14 post under Oaklawn’s leading rider, Ricardo Santana Jr., comes into the Fantasy off a narrow second-place finish to Shedaresthedevil in the G3 Honeybee at Oaklawn on March 7.

A second entrant trained by Cox, Shedaresthedevil was winning for the second time in six starts in taking the Honeybee. The Daredevil filly will gain the riding services of Joel Rosario, breaking from the No. 7 post, in the Fantasy.

Trainer Bill Mott also has two entered in the Fantasy. Harvey’s Lil Goil, who won the Feb. 2 Busanda Stakes at Aqueduct by 7 ½ lengths, breaks from the five post under Martin Garcia. Lake Avenue, with John Velazquez aboard and breaking from the four post, comes off a third-place finish in the G2 Gulfstream Park Oaks on March 26. Mott won the 1996 Fantasy with Escena.

Swiss Skydiver won the Gulfsteam Park Oaks by 3 ½ lengths wire to wire after a third-place finish to Infinite and British Idiom in the Rachel Alexandra. The Ken McPeek runner breaks from post three under Brian Hernandez.

From the rail out, the field consists of: Ice Princess, Kendrick Carmouche; Venetian Harbor, Flavien Prat; Swiss Skydiver, Brian Hernandez; Lake Avenue, John Velazquez; Harvey’s Lil Goil, Martin Garcia; Kansas Kis, Florent Geroux; Shedaresthedevil, Joel Rosario; Ring Leader, Joe Talamo; Lady Glamour, Julie Burke; British Idiom, Javier Castellano; Fire Coral, Tyler Baze; New York Groove, Stewart Elliott; Lazy Daisy, David Cohen; Alta’s Award, Ricardo Santana Jr.
