British Authorities To Require Increased Body Protection For Jockeys

The British Horseracing Authority announced a new measure Thursday aimed at rider safety. Starting October 1, jockeys must wear a Level 2 body protector instead of the Level 1 model.

According to the Racing Post, the Level 2 vest adds is 50 percent better at protecting riders from blows such as kicks.

Because the Level 2 is heavier than the Level 1, the allowance for jockey safety equipment will be increased a pound starting Oct. 1.

The BHA’s chief medical adviser Dr. Jerry Hill commented: “I’m delighted that the Level 2 vests will be introduced as they offer enhanced protection compared to the Level 1 vest, and the extra weight allowance is very welcome.”
