Breeders’ Cup Winners Accelerate, City Of Light, And Monomoy Girl Could Meet In Pegasus

Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Accelerate was bright-eyed the morning after his triumphant victory at Churchill Downs, and trainer John Sadler told drf.com that the colt was in good shape. Plans call for the 5-year-old son of Lookin at Lucky to spend a few days at Lanes End Farm this week, where he will stand stud for the 2019 season. Following that, Accelerate will rejoin his trainer in Southern California to prep for the Pegasus World Cup at the end of January.

Classic runner-up Gunnevera, third in the Pegasus last year, is based in South Florida and will likely point to the race once again. Third-place finisher Thunder Snow will head back overseas and be pointed to try for a repeat in the Dubai World Cup in March, while fourth-place finisher Yoshida will be kept on dirt for a possible tilt at the Pegasus as well.

Joining the Classic performers in that spot could be Dirt Mile winner City of Light, owner William Warren said in the post-race press conference on Saturday. City of Light will also look to make his next start in the G1 Cigar Mile, as is possible for Mind Your Biscuits, who finished 11th in the Classic. Mind Your Biscuits is slated to retire to stud in Japan at the end of 2018, so the Pegasus is not on his radar as of right now.

Another possible Pegasus candidate is Distaff winner Monomoy Girl, according to part-owner Sol Kumin.

“I think we will take a look at the Pegasus,” Kumin said after her one-length victory over Wow Cat. “I think it’s a good distance for her. She
gets a little bit of a break before the race. Speed favoring track at Gulfstream. She’ll get obviously a little bit of a weight break. I think that would be the only race that we would probably look at.”
