Breeders’ Cup Mile: Uni Wins Mare, Filly Battle To Wire With Got Stormy

The only two females in Saturday’s Grade 1, $2 million Breeder’s Cup mile separated from the field late and Chad Brown-trained Uni (GB) prevailed by a length and a half over Got Stormy, trained by Mark Casse.

Under Joel Rosario, Uni settled comfortably near the back of the pack as longshots Hey Gaman and El Tomenta took up the early running, pacing the field with fractions of 22.78, 45.32 and 1:09.27 for the mile over the turf.

Turning for home, both Got Stormy and Uni to her outside got clear runs in mid-stretch, with Uni overtaking her rival for the victory. Another Chad Brown trainee, Wiithout Parole filled out the trifecta, another 1 1/4 lengths behind Got Stormy. The final time was 1:32.45.

Got Stormy went off as the 3-1 race favorite and Uni vied for second choice with Circus Maximus at 7-2.

Owned by the partnership of Michael Dubb, Head of Plains Partners, Robert LaPenta and Bethlehem Stables, Uni was bred in Great Britain by Haras D’Etreham. She’s a 5-year-old daughter of More Than Ready out of the Dansili mare Unaided.

“Unbelievable ride by Joel,” said Sol Kumin of Head of Plains. “We were really worried about the lack of pace, and he did a perfect job, trying to get her over, saving a little bit of ground in the first turn. I thought he got her going at the perfect time, and the other filly ran unbelievably, Got Stormy. And to watch those two fillies throw down in a race like this, it’s one of the ones you’ll remember.

“We had a perfect trip,” said Rosario. “The speed got away from me a little on the backstretch, but she was comfortable and in a good spot so I just sat still with her. I asked her at the three-eighths pole and she gave me a strong run.  That’s when I knew we would win. But when we got alongside of her (Got Stormy), she fought back a little. For a minute I thought oh-oh, because she’s a very nice filly who beat us this summer. But, my filly still had more left and we pulled cleared her in the last sixteenth.”

Uni has won 10 of her 18 career starts and three of four races this year, including the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes at Keeneland last time out.
