Breeders’ Cup Buzz Presented By TVG: A Comeback Cup

The Breeders’ Cup is a traveling show, but it’s been a while since it’s set up shop at several points on the map, and there are a lot of tracks where the only bets on the event have been made over simulcast.

In the Breeders’ Cup Buzz, we’re asking some notable Thoroughbred industry names about their experiences with the event and a few hypothetical questions tied to the races.

In this edition, we pose the question of what Breeders’ Cup venue that hasn’t hosted the event in a while, and why it should get another go at the world-class event.

Justin Border, Exline-Border Racing

“Lone Star Park. That answer is more about the market than the track. In my mind, it’s a growth opportunity in waiting. There is a lot of money and infrastructure in that market to expand the track facilities to be premiere for a big event, the weather that time of year is usually good, horse racing fan base has room for growth there, good cultural fit. It’s easy travel from both coasts, too.”

Samantha Siegel, Jay Em Ess Stable

“Arlington Park, before it closes.”

Liz Crow, Elite Sales, BSW Bloodstock

“Oaklawn Park – once they get a turf course. I love Oaklawn. The people in that town just love racing so much. Every time you go, you can’t go anywhere without running into someone at the diner that knows about racing. I think it would be a fun vibe to run the Breeders’ Cup there.”

Jack Sisterson, Trainer

“I can’t say Belterra Park…Okay, I’ll say Belterra. I love it there. We run quite a few there in the summer, and it’s a great little track. They welcome you there, and it’s sort of a family atmosphere.”

Jamie Roth, LNJ Foxwoods

“Probably Belmont Park. New York is my home state, and it would be fun to support New York racing, and have friends and family come to Belmont. We know the turf course is great and has the tiara races. Woodbine would also be cool, but Belmont is what came to my head.”

Erik Johnson, ERJ Racing, Colorado Avalanche

“It hasn’t been a long while, but I think Del Mar needs to be a fixture in the rotation. It is one of the best places in the world to go visit and the last Breeders’ Cup there was a home run. Del Mar should host it more, period.”
