Keeneland's spring race meet has gotten off to a great start this year, owing in part to a lucrative purse structure and beautiful weather.

According to a report in the BloodHorse, Keeneland's spring meet is tracking ahead of previous years in the categories of attendance and handle. Keeneland's total attendance so far this meet has been 141,104, with an average crowd size of 20,857. In 2016, attendance averaged 16,965 daily for a total of 118,758 over the same time period,

The track reports that $78.5 million has been wagered thus far (through seven programs), up from $76.4 million.

“Keeneland has a tremendously loyal fan base,” Bob Elliston, vice president of racing and sales, told the BloodHorse.

“When you give them beautiful blue skies and best-in-class racing, they will come out in droves. Many of the stars of racing, equine and human, have populated our race cards giving fans a product they can't miss.”
