Bob And Jackie Tops Baltas Exacta In Eddie Logan Stakes

It took little more than a minute and a half for lightly raced Bob and Jackie to go from maiden winner to stakes winner, as the Kentucky-bred colt by Twirling Candy forced the issue throughout and held off stablemate Rijeka late to take Friday’s $75,000 Eddie Logan Stakes at Santa Anita by one length. Trained by Richard Baltas and ridden by apprentice Heriberto Figueroa, Bob and Jackie got a mile on turf in 1:35.16.

Gunned to a forward position from his outside post position, Bob and Jackie did early battle with Manhattan Up, who was ridden by Tyler Baze. Head and head up the backside, Manhattan Up succumbed heading into the far turn, leaving “Bob” with a one length advantage over The Creep and Rafael Bejarano around the far turn.

Straightening for home, favored Rijeka skimmed the rail and unleashed his stretch kick, but he couldn’t get on terms with the winner who never showed any sign of slowing down.

A 1 1/16 miles turf maiden winner in his second start on Nov. 18 at Del Mar, Bob and Jackie was off at 5-2 in a field of eight juveniles and paid $7.80, $3.40 and $2.80.

“I had one speed horse and one closer,” said Baltas. “Bob and Jackie came out of the 10-hole and he pulled his way to the lead. With the rail being out today (20 feet), there might have been a little speed bias, but he’s a good horse.”

Out of the Eskendereya mare Fateer, Bob and Jackie was bred by his owner, Zayat Stables, LLC. With two wins and a second, he picked up $46,440 for the win, increasing his earnings to $88,240.

The Logan win gave Figueroa, 19, his third tally on the day and left his agent, Nelson Arroyo, in high spirits as 2018 draws to a close. “He loses his bug March 15 and there’s no question he’s going to be a top, top rider,” said Arroyo. “He fits any kind of horse and he’s improving every day. The sky’s the limit.”

Ridden by Joel Rosario, Rijeka finished 3 ¼ lengths clear of More Ice. Off as the 3-2 favorite, Rijeka paid $2.60 and $2.20.

More Ice, with Drayden Van Dyke up, was off at 5-1 and paid $2.80 to show.

Fractions on the race were 23.58, 47.63, 1:11.64 and 1:23.42.

First post time for a 10-race card on Saturday is at 12 noon and Santa Anita will guarantee $1 million in the 20 cent Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot.
