Bernard Daney, Former Chairman Of The Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission Dies

Bernard Joseph Daney, an accomplished businessman, educator, and racing regulator who served as chairman of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission for 18 years, died Dec. 9 at age 92.

Daney graduated from Saint Elizabeth School and Wilmington High School in 1943, and in October of that year, he entered the military. He served with Infantry Company F of the 28th Infantry Regiment in France and Germany, and earned a Bronze Star.

Daney graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in August 1948. He was a member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and served as national treasurer of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity from 1952 to 1957. He passed the CPA exam in Delaware and Pennsylvania and headed several large CPA firms in Wilmington from 1953 to 1992.

He and his wife, Arlene, bred and owned approximately 160 horses, including the Pennsylvania-breds Parfaitement, who ran in the 1983 Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and Docent, a 16-time winner of $802,000 who won three Maryland Million stakes, including the Classic in 2002 and 2003.

Daney chaired the Delaware Commission from 1993 to 2011. He was a longtime member of the board of directors of the Association of Racing Commissioners International and was chairman of that organization in 2007. The ARCI honored Daney with a lifetime achievement award in 2009.

He also served as a board member and treasurer of the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders’ Association from 1983 to 2011.

Daney is survived by his wife and four sons. The viewing will be at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church from 9:30 am to 10:30 am on December 15. Mass will begin immediately at 10:30 am and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution be made to the Ministry of Caring 115 E. 14th St. Wilmington, Delaware 19801.
