Belmont Winner Tapwrit Preparing For 2018 Debut This Weekend

Tapwrit, the reigning Belmont Stakes winner, will make his first start in almost a year this weekend. Daily Racing Form‘s David Grening reports the big gray will contest an allowance race on Sunday at Belmont Park. Jose Ortiz will be aboard.

Trainer Todd Pletcher attributed the long break to an injury to the horse’s frog — the triangular, sensitive part of the foot. Pletcher has outfitted Tapwrit with a pad on his right front foot to protect the area.

The son of Tapit most recently finished fourth in last year’s Grade 1 Travers at Saratoga. He also has wins in the G2 Tampa Bay Derby and Pulpit Stakes to his credit.
