BC Distaff: Stewards Rule Fipke Must Pay Two Jockey Fees For Forever Unbridled

Del Mar stewards have determined that owner Charles Fipke must pay both John Velazquez and Joel Rosario the same jockey fees for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, based on how much money Forever Unbridled earns in the race, according to a report in the Daily Racing Form.

Rosario had been the regular rider of Forever Unbridled, piloting her in seven of her eight starts over the past two years. Rosario won three graded stakes aboard Forever Unbridled, including the G1 Personal Ensign, where she defeated champion Songbird.

Velazquez has ridden the 5-year-old mare twice, winning both starts.

Rosario’s agent, Ron Anderson, told the Del Mar stewards that they had the call on Forever Unbridled for the BC Distaff. Trainer Dallas Stewart later confirmed that with the stewards, who later ruled that “given the timing of the change in rider assignment,  Rosario did not have the opportunity to try and obtain another mount in the race.”

According to the DRF, when contacted earlier this week about the jockey switch, Fipke said it “was a business decision” and he refused to discuss it further.
