Batter Up! Mike Smith, Doug O’Neill Among Racing Celebs In Charity Softball Game

LRF Cares, a non-profit group dedicated to providing aftercare for retired racehorses, will host its first Celebrity Softball Game, featuring Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith and two-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Doug O'Neill.

The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT on July 24 at Encinitas Community Park, in Encinitas, California.

For those unable to attend, the game will be broadcast this summer on the TVG Network. Like MTV's Rock N' Jock and MLB's Celebrity Softball game, horse racing's version will consist of top personalities and celebrities from the sports and entertainment world.

“LRF Cares was formed to show how much we care about our retired racehorses,” said LRF Cares and founder and managing partner of Little Red Feather Racing Club Billy Koch. “We are excited to partner with TVG on this event and thank our sponsors, Mark Martinez' M2 Technology, Mick Ruiz' Ruiz Racing, Gary Hartoonian's Rockingham Ranch and Nick Alexander for their tremendous support.”

Smith recently won five stakes races on Belmont Stakes day, including the Ogden Phipps aboard star filly Songbird. O'Neill won the Derby and Preakness with I'll Have Another (2012) and the Derby with Nyquist (2016).

Also scheduled to play are trainers Pete Miller, Phil D'Amato and Richie Baltas, and jockeys Chantal Sutherland and Joe Talamo.

Mike Joyce and Dave Weaver will call the game for TVG with TVG's Brittney Eurton and Christina Blacker providing baseline coverage. A couple of former San Diego Padres also will take part: Two-time All-Star Mark Loretta will be one of the participants and 1976 Cy Young winner Randy Jones will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

“This game will be fun for both the participants and the great owners who are sponsoring the private event,” said LRF Cares and Little Red Feather Racing Club managing partner Gary Fenton. “Food, drinks, and a DJ will create a festive and great day for the industry to get together for a cause we are so passionate about.”

LRF started LRF Cares in 2016, a 501(c)(3) sponsored charitable organization which provides resources towards the aftercare for horse racing partnership horses and other noteworthy causes.
