Baffert Takes Mike Smith Off McKinzie For Breeders’ Cup Classic

Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith will not be mounted on McKinzie, the potential favorite, for this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, according to drf.com. After an off-the-pace tactic and runner-up finish in last weekend’s G1 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita, trainer Bob Baffert is ready to make a switch.

“I’m still going to use Mike on horses,” Baffert said. “But for the Classic, I’m going to make a change. I let Mike know now, because I want to give him a chance to get something else.”

No new rider has been named for McKinzie, who has two wins and four seconds from six starts this season, all under Smith.
