Baffert Pleased By His ‘Halftime Adjustments’ With Champion Arrogate

Arrogate had an easy half-mile breeze Tuesday morning at Santa Anita, cruising around in :50 flat under Rafael Bejarano. Trainer Bob Baffert was pleased with the work, which Arrogate completed in company once again with stablemate Uninvited. According to, Baffert wanted Arrogate to have a “slow” time, and the trainer is focused on keeping the horse “really happy.”

The 4-year-old son of Unbridled’s Song has four more works scheduled before he will contest the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar.

Though Arrogate put together an impressive campaign of four Grade 1 wins beginning last fall–the Travers, Breeders’ Cup Classic, Pegasus World Cup and Dubai World Cup–he has struggled since his return to the racetrack. In his first start after the Dubai World Cup, Arrogate finished a very dull fourth in Del Mar’s San Diego Stakes. The colt did improve to finish a closing second to stablemate Collected in the Pacific Classic, but even Baffert reported that he knows Arrogate is better than he showed that day.

“I like where I am right now,” Baffert concluded. “Del Mar was like the first half. We went in at halftime, changed some things up, made some halftime adjustments.”

#Arrogate continues to work towards the @BreedersCup Classic, going 4F in :50.00 at @santaanitapark! @JuddmonteFarms
