Baffert Plans For Undefeated Nadal, Charlatan To Clash In June 20 Belmont Stakes

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert was excited by Tuesday’s announcement that the 2020 Belmont Stakes would be run on June 20 over nine furlongs, shortened from 1 1/2 miles. According to the Albany Times-Union, Baffert is tentatively planning to send a pair of his top 3-year-old colts to New York for the race: undefeated Arkansas Derby winners Charlatan and Nadal.

The trainer’s other prominent 3-year-old, Authentic, will not target the Belmont Stakes as he is booked to run in the Santa Anita Derby on June 6.

“I just feel fortunate that we are even getting the chance to run in these races,” Baffert told the Albany Times-Union. “It looked pretty gloomy a couple months ago.”

Florida Derby winner Tiz the Law is also expected to target the rescheduled Belmont Stakes, according to owner Sackatoga Stable’s Jack Knowlton.
