Backstretch Workers’ Advocate Calls For Rally To Reopen Santa Anita

Oscar De La Torre, who advocates on behalf of backstretch workers at California racetracks, is organizing a grassroots awareness campaign before the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, which is reviewing a proposal from Santa Anita Park in Arcadia to resume spectator-free racing during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Santa Anita voluntarily began running races with no on-site attendance on March 12. There were no incidents or reports of COVID-19 positive tests. Nevertheless, racing was suspended March 27 by the LA County Department of Health.

Night-time Quarter Horse racing continues at Los Alamitos in neighboring Orange County and in several other states.

According to a “call to action” from De La Torre, the Board of Supervisors is meeting on Tuesday, April 28, at 9:30 a.m. PT. He is urging racing proponents to send letters of support via email to PublicComments@bos.lacounty.gov. Deadline for receipt of emails is Monday, April 27, at 5 p.m. PT, and it is requested agenda item numbers be included. The emails can address agenda items: 14-Worker Protections; 19-Safely Reopening LA County; or 20-LA County Roadmap to Economic Recovery.

Those interested may listen in to the Board of Supervisors meeting by calling 1 (877) 873-8017, with the code #111111. The meeting can also be heard online at http://bos.lacounty.gov/Board-Meeting/Live-Broadcast

That same day, April 28, De La Torre is organizing a “well-coordinated caravan and speak out” in front of the Board of Supervisors meeting, beginning at 11 a.m. PT. The Board of Supervisors building is at 500 W. Temple Street, Los Angeles, Calif.

“Your action and voice will make a difference as decision makers are reviewing the plan Santa Anita has submitted to resume ‘spectatorless’ live racing,” De La Torre said. “More than 750 backstretch workers risk losing income, housing and health benefits without the financial support that live racing provides. We are making a responsible and reasonable request to protect public health and the well-being of horses and workers. California horse racing can help power our economic recovery.”
