Australian Track Avoids ‘Absolute Chaos’ After Finding Metal Spikes On Racecourse

A mid-week race meet in Australia was abandoned Thursday after two 15-inch metal posts were discovered driven into the ground on the racecourse hours before the races were scheduled to begin.

Victoria’s Chief Steward Robert Cram said after the spikes were discovered, stewards met with jockeys, who were concerned that with the long grass on the course, there could be more spikes hidden. Cram said the spikes appeared to be an intentional act.
