Audible Overcomes Slow Start, Wins Cherokee Run In First Start Since Derby

Making his first start since a third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, WinStar Farm, China Horse Club, Starlight Racing and Head of Plains Partners’ Audible came from off the pace to win Saturday’s $200,000 Cherokee Run Stakes on the Breeders’ Cup undercard at Churchill Downs. The 3-year-old son of Into Mischief, ridden by Javier Castellano for trainer Todd Pletcher, covered seven furlongs over the fast main track in 1:22.47. Audible was sent to post as the 6-5 favorite, and crossed the wire 1 3/4 lengths in front.

“He did everything like a professional today,” Castellano said. “The seven furlongs may have been a bit short but he handled everything like a pro. We broke great and got into a great position with the pace up front.”

Audible was bumped a bit at the start, and found himself behind a six-wide wall of horses heading down the chute. Principe Guilherme emerged with the lead after a first quarter in :22.75, just ahead of Dak Attack and Aveenu Malcainu through the backstretch. After a half in :45.69, Castellano started asking Audible for run from seventh position.

Floating wide around the turn, Audible ranged into contention and drove into the lead. At the eighth pole he began to draw away from the field of 11 sophomores, and cruised under the wire with a 1 3/4-length advantage. Honorable Treasure (20-1) closed to finish second, while Principe Guilherme held onto finish third. Cowboy Creed was fourth.

Bred in New York by Oak Bluff Stables, Audible was a $175,000 yearling purchase at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale, and later brought $500,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida Select juvenile sale. The colt’s connections are taking aim at the Pegasus World Cup in January; his current record stands at five wins from seven career starts with two thirds, and earnings of nearly $1.2 million.
