Art Sherman Pondering Retirement: ‘They Took The Old School Out Of It’

Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup-winning trainer Art Sherman appeared on Carolyn Conley’s new podcast, Race Horses, Etc., this Tuesday, engaging in a dicussion about old school horsemanship. Conley, an exercise rider, jockey’s agent, and television host, launched the podcast on May 17, 2020 in an effort to preserve the lessons of legendary trainers, jockeys and horse people.

In this week’s episode, the 83-year-old Sherman describes his earliest days as a groom and a jockey, as well as his transition to training, and he also talks about the reasons he has been pondering retirement.

“It’s a different ballgame,” Sherman said. “I’m not knockin’ the way that they do things, but it’s not fun anymore. They took all that feeling and being able to develop everything… But now you have to go through all this formality. That’s what I’m saying, they took the old school out of it, you know what I mean. They’re taking your trainer’s ability to train a horse.

“We have so many more breakdowns now than we did 40 or 50 years ago. But I think its the breeding that’s in that. I think there’s too much inbreeding and a lot of structure of the horses’ bones aren’t there. That’s my theory, you know, because I rode so many horses that were old and beat up and had big knees and big ankles. They wouldn’t even let ’em run now, the horses that I rode.”

Sherman’s sons, Alan and Steve, have both stepped out to begin their own careers and carry on the family legacy, and Sherman even sent a couple of his own horses their way. His legacy will also being continued on the track with the sons and daughters of champion California Chrome.

The whole game is different, you know. Everybody’s kind of, I don’t know, paranoid, you know.
