Arklow Up Late To Win Joe Hirsch Turf Classic

Winless in five starts this year, Donegal Racing, Joseph Bulger and Peter Coneway’s Arklow broke through for his first career Grade 1 victory on Saturday,  wearing down front-runner Channel Maker to win the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes at Belmont Park under Junior Alvarado.

Trained by Brad Cox, Arklow covered 1 1/2 miles on good turf in 2:27.34 and paid $10 to win. Channel Maker won a photo finish for second over Sadler’s Joy, with Channel Cat fourth in the field of seven older runners.

Arklow tracked Channel Maker throughout the Joe Hirsch, as did Sadler’s Joy, who was never far behind. Fractions were :25.14 for the opening quarter mile, :50.85 for the half, 1:16.13 for six furlongs, 1:40.31 for one mile and 2:03.41 for 1 1/4 miles en route to the final clocking. Channel Cat was tucked in along the rail in fourth in the run down the backstretch.

The top three finishers  raced as a team on the final turn and into the stretch, with Channel Maker to the inside and Arklow to the outside. The latter gradually overtook Channel Maker in the final sixteenth, scoring his sixth career victory from 23 starts.

Arklow is a 5-year-old son of Arch out of Unbridled Empire, by Empire Maker. He was bred in Kentucky by John and Frank Penn.
