Arkansas Derby: ‘Handful’ Silver Dust Demonstrates His Naughty Side At Oaklawn

Tom Durant's Silver Dust had an eventful morning of training at Oaklawn Park on Tuesday, dropping his exercise rider on the backstretch and losing his bridle, though he was quickly corralled by that rider and a pony person. The sophomore son of Tapit, to be entered in Saturday's G1 Arkansas Derby, rejoined his rider and carried on to school in the starting gate, where he was on his best behavior.

“He was really a handful last summer at Churchill,” trainer Randy Morse said in an XBTV interview. “You name it, he'd do it. He's not a mean horse, he's just always looking for other things to do than what he's supposed to be doing.”

Silver Dust broke his maiden in his second start at Churchill, covering a one-turn mile in 1:36.66 to beat fellow Arkansas Derby contender Dilettante by 3 1/2 lengths. The colt returned three months later to run fourth in the G3 Southwest Stakes with a troubled trip, and in the G2 Rebel he was still a bit green, breaking last of the field and refusing to settle on the backstretch, racing evenly late to finish fifth.

“He's been running in spurts in his races,” Morse continued, telling XBTV that he plans to add blinkers to Silver Dust's equipment in the Arkansas Derby, hopefully increasing the colt's focus. “I think he's very good; I don't think we've seen even close to his best… Everybody that's ever gotten on this horse just raves about him. He feels like he's got a whole lot more in the tank that what he's putting out.”

The $270,000 Keeneland September Yearling purchase was pinhooked by De Meric Sales through the OBS 2-year-old sales, when he sold to Durant for $510,000. A long-striding, striking gray son of Tapit, Silver Dust has a lot to prove to get past the talented field lining up for Saturday's Arkansas Derby.
