‘An Absolutely Good Day’: Leonel Reyes Off To Hot Start At Gulfstream West

Jockey Leonel Reyes continued his sizzling start at Gulfstream Park West Saturday, riding four winners to run his victory total to eight during the first four days of the Fall Turf Festival meeting.

Reyes, a two-time Venezuelan champion who scored three victories on the first day of the meeting, won aboard Rigo ($16) in Race 2 on Saturday’s card before visiting the winner’s circle in succession with Dixie Princess (5.40), Zero Spirit ($6) and La Austaliana ($7.20) in Races 5-7.

“It’s an amazing start to ride so many winners today. I have to give thanks to all the owners and trainers. I thank them so much,” Reyes said. “It’s been an absolutely good day.”

The 32-year-old jockey rode more than 1,400 winners in Venezuela while leading the standings at Valencia Racecourse on nine occasions and winning two national championships. Upon the encouragement of Guilfstream Park-based Jose Garoffalo, Reyes ventured to the U.S. in 2016. He rode his first winner, Virgen Morena, on Marcy 23, 2016 at Gulfstream Park, where he rode his first graded-stakes winner, Gladiator King, in the Hutcheson (G3) during the 2018-2019 Championship Meet.
