Ami’s Mesa Takes Fourth In A Row, Sets New Track Record In Presque Isle Masters

Ivan Dalos’ homebred Ami’s Mesa ran out a fourth consecutive victory in Monday’s Grade 2 Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes, setting a new track record in the process. Ridden by Luis Contreras for trainer Josie Carroll, the 4-year-old daughter of Sky Mesa covered 6 1/2 furlongs over the Tapeta in 1:14.68, winning win by just over a length as the favorite at final odds of 6-5.

Breaking near the center of the 12-horse field, Ami’s Mesa was held out wide on the course as the frontrunners all angled over from outside post positions ahead of her. Cavalia had the lead by three-quarters of a length over Code Warrior, while Bar of Gold was vying for third with Artesian. Through fractions of :22.52 and :45.18, the order remained largely unchanged, save Artesian moving into second position along the outside.

Into the turn, Contreras had Ami’s Mesa winding into top gear while still very wide, but wisely decided to hold her behind horses until the head of the lane to save a little bit of ground. Bar of Gold had taken over the lead at that point, with Cavalia fighting on bravely at the rail, but Contreras got Ami’s Mesa into the clear on the outside.

Ami’s Mesa took several moments to find her best stride, but the race was over as soon as she saw the wire in front of her. Contreras allowed her to win as she pleased, crossing the finish about 1 1/4 lengths in front of Bar of Gold (7-2). Cavalia (41-1) was game to finish third, and Pretty Perfection won a photo finish for fourth.

Bred in Ontario by her owner, Ami’s Mesa is a third-generation homebred out of the stakes-winning Victory Gallop mare Victorious Ami. She broke her maiden at first asking at Woodbine, and in her second start took a restricted stakes race. In 2017, Ami’s Mesa has won all four of her starts, the last three in graded stakes company. Overall, the filly boasts a record of six wins from nine starts for earnings of over $500,000.
