Although Winless, White-Faced Racehorse Is A Star Of The Shed Row

Two-year-old Southern Phantom made the first three starts of his career at the recently concluded Saratoga meet. He didn’t win any of them, but it’s safe to say the son of Bodemeister stood out big time.

As CNN Sport puts it, Southern Phantom looks like his face was dipped in a bucket of white paint. He also has mismatched eyes — one blue and one brown. He’s the opposite of a plain brown wrapper.

“He gets his picture taken daily. I’m kind of getting a little upset with it because I’m used to the camera’s being on me,” said trainer Eric Guillot.

The colt has to be be one of the only winless racehorses to have his own Facebook page but life as a white-faced Thoroughbred does come with its drawbacks. Guillot said he has to liberally apply sunscreen when Southern Phantom’s in the sun because his face is so sensitive.

In his three starts, Southern Phantom has a third and two fifth-place finishes. Guillot said the colt might not light the world on fire as a racehorse but he’s destined for a nice career at stud due to his unique appearance.

“If he happens to win the right race, he’s going to be a phenomenal stud because he’ll get 100 mares just from the popularity of his market,” Guillot said.
