Alizee Earns Breeders’ Cup Berth With Coolmore Legacy Stakes Victory

Godolphin’s 3-year-old filly Alizee (AUS) came from last-to-first in a 17 horse field to win Saturday’s one-mile, $1 million Coolmore Legacy Stakes (G1) at Royal Randwick in Australia by two lengths over Prompt Response (AUS) and earned an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) through the International Breeders’ Cup Challenge.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge is an international series of stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will be held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on November 2-3.

As a part of the benefits of the Challenge series, the Breeders’ Cup will pay the entry fees for Alizee to start in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.  Breeders’ Cup will also provide a US$40,000 travel allowance for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program by the Championships’ pre-entry deadline of Oct. 22 to receive the rewards.

Alizee joins Oh Susanna (AUS), winner of the Cartier Paddock Stakes (G1) at Kenilworth in South Africa on Jan. 6, as the first two qualifiers for the Filly & Mare Turf this year.

Trained by James Cummings and ridden by Glyn Schofield, Alizee earned her second Group 1 victory and fifth overall career win in capturing the Legacy. A bay daughter of Sepoy (AUS) out of Essaouira (AUS) by Exceed and Excel, Alizee won the one-mile Flight Stakes (G1) against 3-year-old fillies on September 30.

Alizee, the only 3-year-old filly in Saturday’s race, broke from post 1 at odds of 15-2. She settled toward the rear of the pack and maintained that position approaching the far turn before Schofield angled her wide with 300 meters remaining. Passing a bevy of runners inside the 100-meter mark, she drew on even terms with Prompt Response and continued her powerful drive through the wire. Alizee covered the mile in 1:34.94.

“She’s the best three-year-old in the country,” Cummings said to the“She’s just waited to get back to Randwick to a track that suits her. The team had her in the perfect condition today, fully wound-up, she showed what she could do with the Randwick mile under her belt.”
