After First $10-Million Day, Kentucky Downs Set To Topple 2017 Wagering Record

With the track’s first $10-million day in history Saturday, Sept. 8, Kentucky Downs in Franklin, Ky., is on pace to topple last year’s record handle, which in turn smashed the 2016 mark. A total of $22,070,345 was wagered on Kentucky Downs through the first three days of the five-date 2018 meet that pays the highest average daily purses in the world outside Japan. That’s only $480,416 off what was bet during the entire five-date meet of 2016, itself a record-breaker.

Another record meet seems completely in grasp with Kentucky Downs $8,176,542 off last year’s meet total, or requiring a little over $4 million for each of the final two cards. The smallest betting total in 2017 came when the opening day had to be moved from Saturday to a Wednesday, with $4,633,176 wagered.

“Our goal is to present first-class Thoroughbred racing with an attractive wagering takeout,” Kentucky Downs president Corey Johnsen said after a record $10,039,008 was bet this past Saturday. “So it is very gratifying to reach the $10 million handle milestone. The horseplayers have spoken. And we want to thank all the members of the horse industry for their support.”
