Additional Labor Day Card? Kentucky Downs Seeks Two More Race Dates For 2020

Kentucky Downs will run five days in 2019, but the track’s new owners Ron Winchell and Marc Falcone are hoping to score an additional two days during September for the 2020 meet, reports Thoroughbred Daily News.  Senior Vice President and General Manager Ted Nicholson plans to put the request before the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission later this week.

“In a perfect world, I’d love to have two days over the Labor Day weekend,” said Nicholson. “I get a lot of people saying to me, ‘Why can’t you run at least two days over that weekend?’ They say that if we did, they’d come and make a whole weekend out of it with the wife, family, friends. Nashville has become such a huge tourist destination. And in the last five years, it’s gone crazy. I’d like to benefit from that.”

The additional dates would not affect the approximately $5 million Kentucky Downs currently sends to support Ellis Park, nor would it decrease the purses currently being offered, which average $2.3 million per race day.
