A Tribute To Ben’s Cat: A Legend ‘Gone Too Soon’

On Saturday, Nov. 11, Laurel Park will be hosting ‘Ben’s Cat Day’, which was originally a day set aside by the Maryland Jockey Club to hold a tribute to the gallant gelding upon his retirement. Ben’s Cat was sent to Bayne and Christina Welker’s farm in Kentucky. However, on June 28, Ben’s Cat developed colic and underwent surgery July 6. Ben’s Cat was euthanized July 18 due to complications from his surgery,

In addition to the stakes races on Saturday, Laurel will be giving away a poster and bobblehead in the likeness of Ben’s Cat, whose ashes will be buried adjacent to the historic paddock. His Hall of Fame breeder, owner and trainer, King Leatherbury, and the five jockeys to ride him will also sign autographs following the third race.

In a recent feature for Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred, writer Vinnie Perrone interviews Fern Augusti, who was Ben’s Cat’s groom throughout the gelding’s nine-year racing career, who thought of Ben’s Cat as her “four-legged soulmate.” Perrone also pays tribute to the beloved Maryland champion that is “gone too soon.”
