A New ‘Magnificent Seven’: Dettori Keeps Rolling With Victory In Royal Ascot’s Commonwealth Cup

Jockey Frankie Dettori famously made history in 1996 by winning all seven races on a September card at Ascot Racecourse. It was dubbed the “Magnificent Seven.” Friday, he continued his domination of the current Royal Ascot meet, winning his seventh race of the week with Phoenix Thoroughbred Limited’s Advertise in the Group 1 Commonweath Cup for 3-year-olds.

Despite Dettori’s brilliant meet, Advertise went off at 8-1 in the betting, with Coolmore-owned, Aidan O’Brien trained Ten Sovereigns bet into odds-on favoritism.

Dettori rode Advertise with confidence on the outside of the field until late on, when he urged the colt forward to the lead and could not be caught. 20-1 longshot Forever In Dreams was second with Hello Youmzain, who had a troubled start, in third.

Trained by Martyn Meade, Advertise is a British-bred son of Showcasing out of the Pivotal mare Furbelow. This was his fourth win from seven career starts. Before the Commonwealth, he was 15th, 19 lengths back in the G1 2000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket.
