‘A Jog Through The Baltimore Fog’: Calling 2018 Preakness No Easy Task

Pimlico track announcer Dave Rodman had to have been nervous as a thick fog descended over the course just ahead of Saturday’s 143rd running of the Preakness Stakes. The bizarre weather made Rodman’s binoculars basically useless, and obscured moments of the race from even the NBC television cameras. The announcer told thoroughbredracing.com that he was glad to have three screens in front of him to call the race from.

“I thought I had seen everything,” said Rodman. “I always say to expect the unexpected at the Preakness and there you go. I don’t know what’s in store for next year. Maybe snow?”

All in all, Rodman did an admirable job of calling Justify’s narrow victory, even using the weather to create a solid closing line: “It wasn’t a jog through the Baltimore fog, but he got it done. He’s flawless.”
