2018 Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover Applications Now Open

Applications for the 2018 Retired Racehorse Project's $100,000 Thoroughbred Makeover are now open and will be accepted through January 15, 2018. Accepted trainers will be announced on Feb. 1, 2018.

The Thoroughbred Makeover features competition in 10 different disciplines for Thoroughbreds that have had less than 10 months of retraining for a second career. The disciplines include barrel racing, competitive trail, dressage, eventing, field hunters, freestyle, polo, show hunter, show jumper and ranch work.

The competition will take place Oct. 4-7, 2018, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The title of America's Wanted Thoroughbred will go to the horse that garners the most audience votes. A trade fair, seminars and demonstrations are also part of the Makeover.

The Finale, which welcomes back the top five horses in each discipline to compete for an overall winner, will be live-streamed for those unable to make it to the event. Many horses will be offered for sale at the conclusion of the competition.

Applications are open to junior, amateur and professional riders, and the competition horse need not be acquired at the time of the application. To apply, trainers must show expertise in one of the disciplines through competition highlights and references, and may provide optional video links.

Competition mounts can be acquired from any source the trainer chooses, but the horse must have a published work after July 1, 2016, and must not have begun training for a second career before Dec. 1, 2017.
